$1.60The Story
- A large deciduous native hedge with attractive foliage and edible berries. The plants you will receive are mixed sex and too young to identify as male or female. As such, you might get a mixture of yellow flowers and orange berries (female) and brown flowers and no berries (male).
- Narrow silvery leaves and prickly shoots with, in the case of female sea buckthorn plants, tiny yellow flowers in spring. These are followed by masses of bright orange berries.
- A fully hardy shrub with an average growth rate which will reach a height of approximately 6m (but can easily be maintained at 1-4m).
- Very useful in wet sites (it does not like dry soil) and can fix nitrogen in the soil so it's helpful in improving poor soils.
- The berries are very high in vitamins and antioxidants. They can be used in pies, preserves, sauces and juices. Plant in full sun for the best crop.
- According to Greek legend, sea buckthorn was the favourite food of Pegasus, the winged horse and today, many horse supplements contain berries or leaves from this plant, thought to improve equine health.
