The Story

  • When was the last time you saw Japanese wineberries in the supermarket? That’s right, never. These criminally underrated plants are among our very favourite soft fruits, boasting superbly sweet and bright orange to red berries, with just a hint of fizzy acidity.
  • The dense canes are an attractive red colour, providing interest in even the darkest depths of winter. Later, in spring, dainty star-shaped flowers are produced and set against a backdrop of lush green leaves (which take on yellow hues come autumn).
  • Suitable for large containers, beds and mixed borders, the fruits of this fast-growing phenomenon are delicious eaten fresh, used for sorbet or reduced down into a wonderfully sticky syrup. It's a climbing plant, so you can train the canes up a trellis, obelisk or pergola - whichever you fancy!
  • Why not create your own little grove of unusual berries, featuring wineberries, tayberries, boysenberries and chokeberries?
  • Did you know? Wineberries aren’t, technically speaking, actually berries! They’re actually what’s known as an aggregate fruit – multiple ‘drupelets’ surrounding a central core. We’ll stick to calling them berries, though…
