The Story

  • Also known as Mayflower, this deciduous native hedge is a haven for wildlife
  • Covered in scented white blossoms in spring, with red fruits (haws) in autumn
  • A fully hardy, fast growing plant which will reach a height of approx 8m but can easily be maintained at 1-5m
  • Hawthorn will grow well in all soil types and sites, and is especially hardy in exposed, windy and coastal locations
  • Hawthorn supports over 150 wildlife species, making it second only to the English Oak (Woodland Trust) The thorns make this a safe place for birds to nest - always check before pruning
  • RHS Plants for Pollinators - recognised for its value to pollinators
